Week 32: Haight Street

When we lived in Cole Valley, I spent many weekend mornings wandering up and down Haight Street. There was always something new to see – a mural, a piece of art that someone had adhered to a wall, etc. We moved not too far away and while still an easy walk away, the Upper Haight has lost some of its charm as the older mom & pop stores have been pushed out by higher rents. It’s still a big tourist destination as people come to stand at the corner of Haight & Ashbury to see where the Summer of Love began, but shit shops abound and my heart just isn’t in it.

I’m working from home these days and need to push myself out the door or risk going stir crazy. When the sun broke through the Fogust sky, it seemed like an ideal time to visit the Upper Haight.

  1. I have the same feeling about the Haight that you do. I lived through the 60’s and visited the area often as I was just south of the City. Last Fall I was there and could hardly recognize the place.
