Mainz’s Hauptfriedhof (Main Cemetery) has a great collection of memorials from the mid- to late-1800s.
Contact sheet: I’m not really “working the shot” here. One of the temptations of cemetery shooting is to go from monument to monument too quickly, since there is so much to see. I thought 8, 9, and 11 were the most interesting, but decided to print 8:
The halo above the woman’s head and the tighter crop result from limitations of my enlarger: the clips holding the condensers in place impinge on the 6×6 negative.
Nicely done! I’m sure I’ll end up shooting at the Munich Ostfriedhof a few times this year as it’s close to where I work. 🙂

Thanks! I can also recommend the Altes Südfriedhof down near the Deutsches Museum, lots of interesting monuments from the same era.

Very nice, I really like the one you picked to print. Such interesting memorials and statues there. Look forward to seeing more this 2016. My project will be similar, showing contact sheet then trying to get one good print (maybe a few very good prints along the way).

Thank you, appreciate it. I think the contacts are useful to see what the photographer is thinking, and it’s a tool that’s really unique to film.
