52:500c – Week 01 – Welcome to the Hangover

Welcome to the hangover. It’s strange getting back into a 52-Roll project after a year’s break from the 52 roll thing and the last 52 project involved a single sheet each week. But here I am again! At least this year the photowalk I took into the city with the usual gang from the Toronto Film Shooter’s Meetup was the day after New Year’s Day, but even if it was, I wouldn’t have had a hangover this year, thanks to the fact I didn’t drink an entire bottle of scotch the night before.

I do frequent Toronto a bit and there are areas that I often frequent for purposes of photography the Distillery District and Queen Street come to mind. So this time I wanted to check out something new, or often not featured. So with the rest of the gang we headed up to Casa Loma and the Wynchwood Barns. Casa Loma being the largest private home in Canada and the dream house of businessman Henry Pellatt and Wynchwood being former streetcar barns now a multi-use arts centre.

The trick in the winter, when it’s not -30C outside is to keep moving, so we got in a good hour long photowalk where we actually walked! And it was rather comfortable to do so. But when you dress for the occasion it makes it even easier. As I said in the start, it’s weird going back into this 52 project thing, and I hope I’ll be able to complete it, but given my track record in the past…I think I got this one. Although I wasn’t 100% happy with these photos mostly because of my own stupidity when washing the film afterwards, I used hotter water than the temps I developed in which caused a major curl. Silly Rookie Mistake.

  1. I like your wall abstracts too, especially the 4. They would be good backgrounds for portraits.

Anyone that can get through 52Rolls with several months of freezing cold to contend with has my admiration. I spent 12 years in Edmonton, and doubt very much that I would have been taking photographs out of doors with any regularity even if I was very keen.

    • Oddly enough I love taking photos in the winter! I’m actually disappointed at the lack of snow right now! And yes, I want to get a model out to the Wynchwood Barns for a shoot infront of those doors and in the general area. Maybe for another week!
