52:500c – Week 46 – Distant Voices

Memory is a funny thing. Crieff Hills Community has always been a place of memory for me. I first visited Crieff in 2003 when I helped build an outdoor amphitheater. That same year I joined the executive of the Presbyterian Young People’s Society which held their leadership retreats at Crieff where we would plan out the next year. From those early days of 2003 transitioning from the old guard, late night hikes in 2005, and shooting the image that would become my very first nationally published magazine cover photo. Spoons in 2006. Of course in 2007 the three weekend event convenors (Erin, Connie, and I), managed to manipulate the votes so we each got the weekend theme we wanted. And in 2008 I attended as an advisor as I was too old to actually attend PYPS events.

But I kept going back to Crieff. I mean it was even in my 400TX:365 52-Roll project back in Week 48 of that year. Which is probably why back in September when Heather and I were exploring possibilities for our wedding reception and after striking out at the Aberfoyle Mill. I had that gut instinct again, that same instinct that had to give Heather a birthday present back in February that got this all started. I headed south to Crieff. In fact, these photos were taken before meeting with the Crieff Staff to setup what we needed to hold our reception in the 1874 MacLean Hall, a one-room schoolhouse turned dining hall next year.

The entire site is beautiful, with modern and historic buildings on the site, trails through the woods. And many of these images touch on some sites that I’m connected to. The buildings we stayed in at PYPS, Erin’s Rock, and so on. On a more technical aspect, I think I developed this in far too cold water, but then again the temperature took a major plummet at the beginning of this week so I’m not really surprised. Guess that thermometer is going to be used again for B&W developing!
