52:500c – Week 51 – Once Again With Feeling

Hamilton hasn’t always been the just starting to come back downtown. In fact, I’ve been able to watch things turn around in the downtown. But I’ve always had the soft spot for some grit and a taste of Urban Decay. There’s a gritty industrial underbelly to the city one that I desperately wanted to photography before the project was up.

Thankfully, being let out early for the Christmas holiday allowed me to take a rare weekday photo trip into the underbelly. While Hamilton is nothing like some of the rust belt towns I’ve visited in the USA, there is still a certain amount of urban decay left along streets like Barton, Kenilworth, and Ottawa. The areas where the men of the steel mills live and lived when the boom was happening.

Today you see poorly maintained buildings that at one time were grand, banks turned glassware shops, boarded up, or simply abandoned storefronts. But at least there’s still a community here, and that is why Hamilton will rise again.
