Week 51: shooting Brutalist architecture w/ Ilford Delta 3200 film

I traveled to a wedding in San Diego California over the week between Christmas and New Years. I’d loaded my Mamiya 6 with a 120 roll of Ilford Delta 3200 film to shoot at the wedding. For a variety of reasons I ended up not shooting any film at the wedding. So I had the quandary of needing to finish the roll before heading through security on the flight back home.

My first thought was to photograph the architecture of the Salk Institute, in La Jolla, at dusk. I showed up and discovered the facility locked down like a prison. While I could arrange access as part of a tour, I couldn’t do it on short notice.

My third thought was to shoot the inverted pyramid library building at UC San Diego. So that’s what I did.

It’s a wonderful building for interesting angles and shapes and forms. I was also interested in seeing how the graininess of the Delta 3200 would look.
